Chico Hamilton Returns to Boston
Joyous Shout! is happy to announce that Legendary Jazz Drummer & Bandleader Chico Hamilton will be kicking off an active 2002 touring schedule with his young "Euphoria" group- with Cary DeNigris on guitar, Paul Ramsey on bass, Evan Schwam on tenor sax, and Karolina Strassmeyer on alto and soprano sax - on March 6th at Scullers Jazz Club, 400 Soldiers Field Road, Boston, MA 02134 tel. 617.783.0090, with two sets at 8 & 10 PM!! Just hitting the street now is a track titled "For Mods Only" from Chico's 1968 Impulse album THE DEALER, which is included on the latest offering from Thievery Coporation- Sounds From the Verve Hi-Fi.
June '01 saw the release of Chico's debut recording for Koch Jazz (www.kochentertainment.com), FORESTSTORN. The album features Chico's young "Euphoria" group with Cary DeNigris on guitar, Paul Ramsey on bass, Erik Lawrence on alto and soprano sax, and Evan Schwam on tenor sax, as well as Special Guest Appearances from Former Bandmembers Arthur Blythe, Steve Turre and his wife Akua Dixon, Eric Person, former Spin Doctors guitarist Eric Schenkman (a former student of Chico's), Blues Traveler front man John Popper (also a former student of Chico's), and Charlie Watts of The Rolling Stones. Setting up the album in May '01 was Chico being featured on the hour long NPR Jazz Profiles series, hosted by Nancy Wilson. FORESTSTORN has received rave reviews from around the world, debuted at #32 on the Gavin Jazz Chart and peaked at #13 on the Yellow Dog Jazz Chart, and November saw MAJOR features on Chico in Down Beat, Jazz Times and Modern Drummer. One of the TRUE live performance highlights of 2001 was Chico tearing down the house on the Out-Of-Doors Festival at Lincoln Center 8/17 on a 80th Birthday Program titled "My Funny Valentine- A Tribute to Chico Hamilton" with VERY Special Guest Appearances by Joe Beck, Arthur Blythe, Larry Coryell, Akua Dixon, Rodney Jones, and Eric Person in front of an audience estimated at 2300!!
In store for 2002: This Spring Chico will be in the studio recording his follow up to FORESTSTORN for Koch Jazz, rumored to include guest appearances from some of the HEAVY WEIGHTS from the world of jazz guitar, who started their careers in Chico's group; a series of promotional appearances with the Macanudo Bus Tour to help promote the Macanudo Jazz ad campaign in which Chico and his group are featured; this year will bring the release of GROOVE MASTER- The Chico Hamilton Remix Project featuring Eric Schenkman, Joey Davis, Eric Person, Joe Claussell and many more; and here will be heavy touring activities including dates already confirmed- August 24th on the Berkshire Jazz Festival, Great Barrington, Mass (w/ Euphoria), August 29th on the Chicago Jazz Festival, Chicago, IL (w/ Euphoria + Special Guests Arthur Blythe & Larry Coryell), September 2nd on the Bumbershoot Festival, Seattle, WA (w/ Euphoria) October 5 at Richard Stockton College, Pamona, NJ (w/ Euphoria).
